Shiseido Co. Acquires Bare Escentuals
TOKYO and SAN FRANCISCO – Leading Japan-based cosmetic company Shiseido Co. Ltd. entered into an agreement with mineral-based cosmetics innovator and DRTV giant Bare Escentuals to take over the U.S. company for about $1.7 billion. Supreme Court Rules to Limit Political Ad Spending
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 5-4 ruling last week overturned campaign finance laws, allowing corporations, unions and special interests groups to spend their money on independent advertisements supporting or opposing political candidates. Not only does the decision affect the election process in the United States, but it also could mean big changes for the media industry, fueling more spending throughout election seasons or even on last-minute spending for major races. BJ Global Wins $600K, Gets Injunction for Trademark Infringement
IRVINE, Calif. – On December 30, the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California ruled that Ediza Online Inc. had violated the law by “tarnishing, blurring, disparaging, diminishing or otherwise diluting” the Kymaro New Body Shaper trademarks owned by BJ Global Direct Inc. As part of the judgment, Ediza is to pay BJ Global just less than $600,000 in damages and costs, plus post-judgment interest. More...
Marketers Shift Funds to Social Media in 2010
LONDON – According to a survey released last week, 66 percent of marketing professionals worldwide will be investing in social media marketing in 2010. Conducted by Alterian, the seventh annual survey of 1,068 marketers found that 40 percent would be shifting more than one-fifth of their traditional DR budgets to social media this year. More...

 Impact Radius launches this month with a multi-channel performance advertising platform that connects advertisers and media partners directly for the delivery of performance campaigns across TV, radio, print and online media channels from a single platform. The founding Impact Radius team includes Wade Crang, Todd Crawford, Lisa Riolo, Roger Kjensrud and Per Pettersen.

 Adam J. Block joins Inter/Media Advertising as the newest account director after an 11-year stint at Initiative as account director/associate media director.

 Northern Response has begun international distribution of its fitness commercial TOWER 200 from Body by Jake Global. The roll out will occur through DRTV, print, home shopping, Internet and retail in more than 90 countries.

 Mobile advertising industry leaders join to help relief efforts in Haiti in one of the largest mobile fund-raising effort. AdMob, Eyeblaster, Jumptap, Microsoft Advertising, Millennial Media, Ringleader Digital and other networks were approached by mGive-Mobile Accord to develop the mobile advertising campaign designed to broaden the reach of the American Red Cross Haiti relief efforts via the organization’s text messaging mobile campaign.

 Meg Armstrong is named the general manager of E-commerce for QVC. In this newly created role, Armstrong will oversee QVC’s online business including the leadership and execution of its business plans, policies, practices and vendor relationships.

 Clash Media, an online customer acquisition specialist, launches a new Revenue Path enhancement to help marketers gather customer data from social media sites such as Facebook and Hi5. This new approach, which makes offers appear indigenous to the Web site, will allow marketers and advertisers to access new information on potential customers without affecting the user experience.

 Media Horizons Inc. names Joe Page as its new creative director. Page, who has helped drive creative transformation for several major Fortune 500 firms, is the recipient of 16 John Caples International Creative Awards and five DMA ECHO Awards.
