Walmart's New Online Marketplace2 Sep, 2009 Response This Week
BRISBANE, Calif. – Walmart has partnered with several retailers for the Walmart Marketplace, an online shop on its Web site, Walmart.com. Retailers initially selling on the site will include CSN Stores, which sells home, baby, toys sporting goods and shoes; eBags, retailers of bags and luggage; and Pro Team, a subsidiary of Dreams Inc., a sports apparel and collectables shop.
“We’ve added nearly 1 million new items to our online assortment with the introduction of Walmart Marketplace, making it even easier for customers to find more of what they want when shopping Walmart.com,” says Kerry Cooper, chief marketing officer for Walmart.com. “Working with select retailers, known for their strong customer service and large online assortments of new merchandise, gives our customer more reasons to choose Walmart.com when shopping online.”
Starting this month, the products are online and available for purchase through Walmart.com, and additional retailers will join the collaboration over the course of the next year.
“It looks like Walmart is competing straight up against Amazon.com, by broadening its inventory,” said Forrester Research’s Sucharita Mulpuru. “While Walmart has had mixed success online, it established a clearly differentiated, strong multi-channel position for itself upon introducing the site-to-store services two years ago,” the analyst added in an interview with DMNews.com.
Retailers that partner with the online Marketplace will manage and support each order they receive, including shipping, handling, customer service, exchanges and returns.
