JCPenney Launches Mobile Coupon Scanning Program

SAN JOSE, Calif. – JCPenney is partnering with Cellfire Inc. to help shoppers ring up savings with a new cell phone coupon program. Customers in the Houston area will soon be able to download and carry coupons on their mobile phones that can be scanned directly from the phone’s screen into the register.

In order to make the process smoother, new imaging scanners that can read 2D barcode coupons have been put at point-of-sale registers in 16 JCPenney stores in the Houston metro area.

“We’ve always made it easy for our customers to save money,” says Mike Boylson, executive vice president and CMO for JCPenney. “These mobile coupons are the ultimate in customer convenience because there’s no need to clip or carry around a printed coupon, and they can be instantly scanned from a cell phone. It’s another way we’re innovating to enhance the customer’s shopping experience.”

The initiative will be introduced during National Coupon Month through Web and mobile advertising and through E-mail to members of the department store’s JCP Rewards program in the Houston market. Customers who download Cellfire can have access to the coupons on their phones that they would normally receive by mail.

The company will release coupons almost every week through the holiday season. Offers will include targeted discounts and mobile redeemable rewards.
