Eric Steaple has been promoted to director of ad sales for direct response at Turner Broadcasting, where he will oversee all DR account executives in the company’s news, entertainment, animation and sports divisions. For the past four years, Steaple had served as an account executive in Turner’s CNN news division.

Hawthorne Direct wins the 2009 Interactive Media Award at the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet in Fairfield, Iowa. The award honors a community business that has shown excellence in online media.

Motivational Fulfillment & Logistics Services (MFLS) announces that it shipped to 406 unique retail chains in 2008. Some of the major retailers included on the list are Bed, Bath & Beyond, WalMart, Costco, Target, Sam’s Club, Best Buy, Amazon, Kohl’s, Big Lots, Toys ‘R Us and CVS.

GSI Commerce Inc. is now the full-service E-commerce provider for Mars Drinks, a division of Mars Inc., for its Flavia coffee brand. GSI recently re-launched the web site and is also providing customer care, fulfillment and digital marketing and design services.

Market researcher Nielsen Co. will reduce its workforce by 1,600 in 2009, or less than 5 percent.

Sprint names Euro RSCG Chicago its digital marketing agency of record, expanding the agency’s role. Euro RSCG will be responsible for E-mail as well microsite and landing page efforts.

AKQA, an independent digital marketing agency, welcomes Jim Rossman as its president and COO. Rossman is currently the chief operating officer at Digitas, the Publicis Groupe direct and digital marketing unit.

Newsmax Media launches a national TV/radio advertising campaign. The 30- and 60-second spots, which offer a free World Bank Emergency Radio and free trial subscription of Newsmax, began airing last week.

Higher Power Marketing engages Last Second Media Inc. to handle its client development. Last Second Media will be the sales force for Higher Power Marketing, developing new clients for various direct response and per-inquiry media platforms.

BuderEngel and the agency formerly known as Grant, Scott & Hurley, join forces to form Engine Company 1, at 451 Pacific Avenue in San Francisco. The new team, housed in a historic firehouse, is home to those who know advertising agencies, design firms and brand consultancies.
