Kingstar Media launches its new digital media division, L49 Digital, which delivers mobile-first campaign strategies to elevate broadcast ads and direct response campaigns. The division includes SEM, web development, paid social, programmatic retargeting, and other in-demand lead generational tactics to bolster the performance of DR campaigns and more efficiently track campaign activity. Kingstar also welcomes Kristy Pinand, a 15-year DRTV veteran and established sales professional, as vice president of business development.

CAA South Central Ontario, a Canadian roadside assistance service, launches new 60- and 120-second DRTV ads created and produced by Toronto-based direct response agency, Northern Lights Direct. The campaign is designed to build on the established CAA brand and highlight the many benefits of CAA membership.

National Merchants Association, a bankcard leader and merchant advocacy group, and dLocal, a payments platform for Latin America and emerging markets, partner to provide payments processing services throughout Latin America.

The National Retail Federation expects 137.4 million people to go shopping during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, with Black Friday the weekend’s busiest day. That amounts to 59 percent of the population, up slightly from last year’s 58.7 percent.

Verto Analytics, a consumer-centric measurement company, launches Verto Retention Reports™, a new way to determine the value of a mobile app user. The tool gives mobile app developers and digital publishers a more accurate way to calculate their ROI on mobile ad spending and understand how their app retention compares to their competitors.

Rebelmail, an e-mail startup, launches an app to help e-mail marketers make their messages more interactive with photo galleries and quizzes.

Phunware, a real-time audience platform, partners with data platform Pixalate to fight ad fraud. Phunware will use Pixalate’s fraud prevention solutions across its platform. Phunware’s platform monitors for and prevents fraudulent and non-human traffic across mobile monetization and audience-building campaigns.

Univision plans to lay off nearly 6 percent of its workforce (250 people). The layoffs, and an impending restructuring, are “in response to difficult times, challenging times,” says Isaac Lee, Univision’s digital, entertainment, and news chief. Univision reportedly suffered a third-quarter loss of $30.5 million, an 8-percent decline in revenue.

Through eight weeks of the new season, ABC reports it has five of the top 10 non-sports shows among viewers age 18-to-49 whose households earn $100,000 or more. “Modern Family” is No. 1 with a 6.4 Nielsen rating; CBS’ “Big Bang Theory” is No. 2 at 6.3; and NBC’s new show “This Is Us” ranks third at 6.2. ABC’s other top 10 shows include first-year drama “Designated Survivor” (No. 4), 5.5, and “Grey’s Anatomy” (No. 5), 4.3.

Walmart’s third-quarter earnings beat analysts’ expectations, even as net sales fell short. The retailer also expressed confidence for the holidays. Walmart’s net income fell to $3.03 billion, or 98 cents per share, in the quarter ended Oct. 31, which was two cents higher than Wall Street’s prior consensus.

Facebook stops running its Atlas ad server, a place for brands to manage online ad campaigns, and instead is solely using it as a measurement tool for marketers. Erik Johnson, Facebook’s head of client measurement, says clients valued the measurement and not the ad-serving part.

Amazon prepares to take its video streaming service worldwide in a challenge to Netflix, the world’s largest paid online TV network. Amazon, which currently offers the service in only a handful of countries, announced the plans of “The Grand Tour,” a lavish new reality show. In December, the show will premiere in 200 countries and territories around the world, exclusively on Amazon. Amazon has spent billions of dollars licensing programming and producing original shows and movies as part of its Prime service. Customers who pay $99 a year for free shipping and other benefits get access to a library of new and older content at no added cost.
