Streaming Media Devices Rise, Connected TVs Lag

Venture capitalist and former wireless and cable lobbyist Tom Wheeler is President Obama's choice as the next chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Wheeler, who now chairs the FCC's Technology Advisory Council, headed the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) in the 1980s. From 1992 to 2004, he was CEO of the wireless industry group CTIA.

NBCUniversal's broadcasting revenues took a major hit in the first quarter – likely due to a combination of struggling prime-time ratings and the fact that it did not broadcast the Super Bowl in February 2013, as it did in 2012. The Comcast company's broadcasting business lost 18.5 percent to land at $1.5 billion.

Time Warner's quarterly earnings jumped 19 percent from last year – “better than expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters " – a result of continued strong performance by its cable TV and movie studio holdings, writes Chris Isidore. "Publishing, which includes Time Inc., posted a $9 million operating loss, wider than the $4 million operating loss a year earlier."

CBS is now threatening to stop broadcasting and go cable-only, “if courts don’t stop the Internet startup Aereo Inc. from retransmitting shows such as 'NCIS' without permission,” writes Christopher Palmeri. “We’ve spoken to cable operators in New York. We can do it in a few days,” CBS CEO Les Moonves said at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., last week.

California state assembly member Bonnie Lowenthal is temporarily shelving her proposed privacy bill, the Right to Know Act (AB 1291), which would have required companies to disclose, upon consumers' request, the names of ad networks, data brokers or other third parties that received personal data. Opponents argued that the bill was too onerous, especially for small businesses. Lowenthal reportedly says she intends to introduce the measure again next year.
