Cord-Cutting Hits New High; 762K Drop Traditional Pay TV in Q1

Fyre Social Influencers Sued for Fraud

Seattle Passes Tough Broadband Privacy Rules; Other States Consider Similar Move  
SEATTLE – The city of Seattle has passed privacy regulations similar to the nationwide privacy rules that were repealed by Congress and President Trump last month. The rules, which take effect May 24, require cable providers to obtain subscribers’ opt-in consent before using information about their Web browsing for ad purposes.

TELEBrands files a lawsuit against the Taiwanese maker of the Everstar “Star Laser.” The lawsuit charges that Everstar Merchandise Co. Ltd. is in violation of two of TeleBrands’ U.S. patents. This is the fourth federal lawsuit brought by TELEBrands to protect Star Shower.

Hulu and Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI) complete a distribution agreement that will see SNI’s U.S. networks included on Hulu’s new live TV streaming service. The deal gives Hulu both live and on-demand rights for SNI’s HGTV, Food Network, and Travel Channel at launch, as well as DIY Network, Cooking Channel, and Great American Country.

YANGAROO Inc., a digital media management and distribution company, announces preliminary and unaudited numbers indicating 2017 Q1 revenues in the range of $1.65 million to $1.7 million. The ad division ended the first quarter with record revenues increasing approximately 50 percent over the same quarter in 2016 and up approximately 20 percent over the prior quarter – driven primarily by new customers and increased use by current customers.

QVC announces a multi-year agreement to carry the Martha Stewart brand, including skincare, fashion apparel, and food and beverage. The collaboration is expected to launch in the second half of this year and will feature frequent appearances by Stewart and some of her “favorite experts.”

Sinclair Broadcast Group proposes a deal to buy Tribune Media for nearly $4 billion that would add 42 television stations in 33 markets to the Baltimore-based Sinclair’s 173 TV stations that it owns or runs in 81 markets. Tribune’s TV stations include 14 Fox affiliates, 12 CW affiliates, six CBS affiliates, three ABC affiliates, two NBC affiliates, three MyNetworkTV affiliates, and two independent stations.

A new study by Olapic finds that 70 percent of respondents in the U.S. say they’d be more likely to buy a product after seeing a positive or relatable consumer-generated image of it online.

Cars.com will spin off from media company TEGNA into a separate automotive marketplace and begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange June 1.

Tax prep giant H&R Block consolidates its media assignment with Publicis Media agencies. The firm is shifting its estimated $80 million broadcast media planning and buying assignment from Omnicom’s OMD to Publicis Media’s Mediavest/Spark, effective immediately. Sources said H&R Block wanted a more integrated messaging approach across media.

A new study from Google says the majority of watch time on YouTube is mobile, at home, during prime time, and on horizontally oriented screens. It adds that 68 percent of YouTube users watched YouTube to help make a purchase decision.

Tech firm Boston Dynamics announces it is testing a dog-like robot to deliver goods to shoppers’ front doors. The tests are currently limited to Boston Dynamics employees’ homes.  

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) makes a last-minute bid to delay implementing the menu-labeling rule it began pushing for seven years ago. The rule requires that chain restaurants, supermarkets, and other foodservice venues with 20 or more locations post calorie counts for all prepared items offered. The regulation was mandated by 2010’s Affordable Care Act.
