DMA Asks FTC to Extend COPPA Rule Changes

Report: Local TV Ads Worth $21 Billion by 2017  
CHANTILLY, Va. – Media advisor BIA/Kelsey says that by 2017, local TV stations’ traditional TV advertising revenues will rise 12.5 percent to $21.5 billion from $19.2 billion before 2014. This doesn’t include growing digital TV advertising dollars that stations are recognizing – estimated to be $700 million this year and rising to $1.1 billion in four years.

InfoTech, a software house and system solutions company, announces it has completed integrating its Web-based Media Management System (MMS) and Media Monitors’ spot monitoring data. “MMS has a very flexible design that allows it to import spot monitoring data from a wide variety of sources in a wide variety of formats” says Derek Viglianti, InfoTech’s executive vice president of marketing systems. “This is a great advantage for our users, because it allows them to work with just about any data provider without the need for customization.”

DRTV agency Script To Screen earns three 2013 Jordan Whitney Greensheet awards for infomercial excellence. The Santa Ana, Calif.-based company won in these categories: best infomercial direct offer for Milana Bra; best infomercial direction for Red Carpet Manicure; and best use of infomercial testimonials for SENSA.

Ad veteran and former Response Advisory Board member Don Potter releases a new novel called Spin Masters, a suspense-thriller with the advertising business as a backdrop. The book, the third in a series from Potter, follows the activities of Katie Norris who leaves New York to work on the president’s re-election campaign only to realize that subliminal ads are carrying hidden messages to an unsuspecting public. Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE), chairman of the Senate subcommittee that oversees the United States Postal Service, said last week at the Postal Vision 2020 conference he expects to have a new reform bill passed by both houses of Congress and sitting on President Obama’s desk before Congress’ July 4 recess.

Canada’s new Anti-Spam Legislation, nicknamed “CASL,” is expected to come into effect this year. Under CASL, all messages that encourage participation in a commercial activity require consumer opt-in, the name and contact information from sender, as well as a clear mechanism to unsubscribe.

A lawmaker in California proposes a bill that would require Web companies to share with consumers the “personal” information that’s been collected about them upon request. The measure also would require companies to disclose which ad networks, data brokers or other third parties have received consumers’ data. State Assembly member Bonnie Lowenthal recently introduced the Right to Know Act (AB 1291), a measure that defines personal information broadly as “any information that identifies or references a particular individual or electronic device.”

Marketing agency Netmining surveyed 131 agency and client execs and found engagement metrics as the top criteria for driving the programming marketplace, cited by 73 percent of respondents. Several other metrics – ranging from GRPs to ROI to CPA and “quality scoring – rounded out the mix of reasons (11) for using programmatic buying.

Havas Media, a global data management network, and DG, an ad management firm, announce a global cross-media partnership to support optimizing and delivering ads across TV and online. The agreement also supports mobile devices, as well as search engine marketing through DG’s channel content for search platform.

Mobile commerce climbs 31 percent in the first quarter from a year ago, fueled by growing tablet use and improved customer service. M-commerce now accounts for 17.4 percent of total online retail sales, up from 13.3 percent in the year-earlier period.

Three magazine subscribers are asking a federal appeals court to reinstate their lawsuits accusing the publishers of violating a California law dealing with the sale of customer lists. Men’s Journal and Time subscribers say in new court papers that their cases were wrongly dismissed last year, when trial judges ruled that the two consumers hadn’t suffered any economic injury and therefore lacked “standing” to sue. A Runner’s World subscriber argues that her case was wrongly dismissed, although for slightly different reasons.

Some 10 million smart glasses will ship worldwide between 2012 and 2016. The glasses allow wearers to see sat-nav directions, take pictures and reply to E-mails. The market segment will grow from about 50,000 shipments in 2012 to 124,000 in 2013, according to IHS IMS Research, April 2013. The biggest jump will come in 2014 when Google Glass begins to become readily available and ship to consumers. The analyst firm estimates smart glass shipments will rise to 6.6 million in 2016.

The Harris Poll says that 78 percent of Americans have used technologies that enable them to watch TV shows on their own schedules. The top methods of delayed watching include: on-demand services (41 percent); TiVo, DVRs or other recording devices (37 percent); Netflix streaming services (30 percent); purchasing, renting or borrowing episodes or seasons on DVD (29 percent); Hulu or Hulu Plus (22 percent).
