FCC Chair Might Seek to End Limits on Municipal Networks 
WASHINGTON – Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler suggested last week he might seek to abolish laws lobbied for by Internet service providers that block municipalities from building and using their own fiber-based broadband networks.

Digital Ad Revenue Hits $42.8 Billion in 2013, up in 1Q 2014 
NEW YORK – The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) reports that fourth-quarter 2013 digital ad revenues hit $12.1 billion, and full-year revenues were $42.8 billion, beating broadcast TV (though not TV in total) for the first time.

TV Ad Dollars to Outpace Digital Video 6-to-1 
NEW YORK – Despite the huge growth of digital video advertising in the U.S., TV will add more new dollars this year – $2.19 billion more than 2013, compared with a $1.76 billion increase in digital video ad spending last year over 2012, says eMarketer.

Connected TV Viewers to Post Double-Digit Growth

DMW Direct, a direct response ad agency, welcomes four new employees: Donna Durant, account manager; Irene Mann, creative services manager; TJ Methvin, proofreader; and Alissa Moore, production artist. The agency also promotes Valerie Smith to vice president, account services.

Topeka Capital Markets predicts that CBS will take in $2.6 billion in upfront revenue this year.

The Priceline Group agrees to acquire OpenTable, a real-time online restaurant reservation app, for $103 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at about $2.6 billion. The deal will move the company into restaurant marketing and will strengthen its position in mobile and search.

A dispute between Netflix and Internet service providers (ISPs) about choppy video streams draws the attention of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler. “I have experienced these problems myself and know how exasperating it can be,” Wheeler said in a statement. He added that the FCC is also investigating the new interconnection agreements between Netflix and ISPs, including Comcast and Verizon.

eMarketer says the U.S. will be among nine countries where smartphone adoption exceeds more than half the total population this year. That figure will reach 15 countries, representing about 500 million people, by 2015.

Amazon launches a new service that will allow its 240 million active users to use their financial information stored on to pay their bills online and manage their subscriptions. For years, PayPal has been the leader in this sector, allowing consumers to pay for subscriptions and other services.

Facebook’s decision to expand its behavioral targeting program draws a rebuke from lawmaker, Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), who says the move “raises a major privacy red flag” for teens. “It doesn’t matter where teen users are online, Facebook will create detailed digital dossiers without their permission based on what they click,” Markey says in a statement. “Now more than ever, we need to put rules on the books to ensure teens are protected from being tracked.”

According to the ARRIS 2014 Consumer Entertainment Index, broadcast TV remains the staple of in-home entertainment, with a nearly universal 96-percent penetration rate, while a growing aversion to traditional TV advertising is opening the door for multiscreen merchandising. The biggest challenge of today’s multiscreen world may be finding the space to save everything we want to watch, says the report.

A new trends report says mobile video viewing of online video has doubled in the last year and now comprises 22 percent of online video, according to Ooyala. That trend is fueled by millennials, who often opt first for a mobile device or connected TV to watch video. This group watches nearly three times as much online video as those in other demographics – 35 percent compared to 12 percent.
