FTC Tells Senate Illegal Robocallers Retargeted 
WASHINGTON – The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) told a U.S. Senate Commerce Subcommittee last week it’s been stepping up its attack to fight illegal commercial robocalls by enforcing the Do-Not-Call (DNC) registry and seeking to spur technical solutions to block those calls.

Millennials Spend 1-Plus Hour Shopping Online Every Day 
NEW YORK – Consumers between ages 18 and 34 are more likely than their 35-to-64-year-old counterparts to engage in nearly every online shopping activity, with 40 percent of males and 33 percent of females in the younger age group reporting that ideally they would buy everything online, says a survey from ad agency DDB Worldwide.

Worldwide mobile ad revenue increased sharply in 2012, rising 82.8 percent to $8.9 billion from $5.3 billion in 2011. Growth was highest in North America, at 111 percent, followed by Western Europe (91 percent), Latin America (71 percent), Central Europe (69 percent), the Middle East and Africa (68 percent), and Asia-Pacific (60 percent).

Microsoft announces plans to pull the plug on MSN TV by Sept. 30. The company is expected to unveil a broad restructuring soon, which will devote far more of its attention to products and services.

NBCUniversal is making its cable networks available via TV Everywhere, starting with USA Network, reports B&C. Parent company Comcast is currently authenticating subscribers, allowing them to access USA programs on their personal computers.

On the heels of filing for a $65 million IPO, YuMe is rolling out a multiscreen “Household Targeting” program this week to help brands reach consumers at home. The new tech service is designed to deliver in-stream video ads across every connected screen.

A new study says consumers are uncomfortable with new technologies that can observe them watching TV, per Boston-based Strategy Analytics. Forty-three percent of people would either never allow a camera or sensing device to be connected to their TV.

Privacy watchdogs in the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy ask Google to rewrite its privacy policy in Europe or face legal sanctions. Google already was censured in Europe over its collection of Wi-Fi data, including usernames, passwords and webpage viewing, while collecting photos for its Street View system.

Hearst is taking on Aereo in federal court in Boston, alleging that the online video start-up is a “free-rider” that infringes copyright by streaming over-the-air TV programs to tablets and smartphones. Hearst is seeking an injunction prohibiting the Barry Diller-backed start-up from continuing to operate.
