70% of U.S. TV Nets Lost Traditional Pay-TV Subscribers 
NEW YORK – A new report says a full 70 percent of U.S. TV networks lost traditional pay-TV subscribers, with only 35 of the 118 measured U.S. TV networks showing some traditional pay-TV subscriber growth.

Amazon Increased Holiday TV Ad Spend by 76 Percent 
SEATTLE – Amazon increased spending in linear TV ads by 76 percent and digital by 224 percent – the biggest increases in each area year-over-year, according to The MediaRadar Trend Report, which examined holiday advertising spend among major retailers between October and November 2016.

Verizon led all U.S. carriers in “earned digital engagement” from Nov. 16 through Dec. 15, accounting for 53.4 percent of overall ad engagements among carriers, according to iSpot.tv. Verizon’s ad “Quadruplets,” which touts a promotional offer for the Pixel, was the top-ranking spot, claiming 37.9 percent of Verizon’s paid engagements.

Visa and MasterCard partner to speed the adoption of payment tokens in their respective Visa Checkout and Masterpass digital wallet platforms. The effort lets Visa request tokenized MasterCard payment credentials from MasterCard for provisioning within Visa Checkout, and MasterCard can request tokenized Visa credentials from Visa for provisioning into Masterpass. Both companies’ wallet solutions will use tokens in place of real card numbers, adding an extra layer of security.  

Disney gives Hulu exclusive subscription streaming rights to movies like “Pocahontas,” “Mulan,” and many others. Hulu is licensing 56 movies from Disney, which makes it the biggest movie licensing deal for the service to date, Variety reports. Competitor Netflix struck a multi-year deal with Disney in 2012, and has been getting new theatrical releases from Disney on an exclusive basis for the past few months.

Adobe Digital Insights reports holiday online sales grew 10.7 percent year-over-year to $79.2 billion, and e-mail accounted for 15 percent of the $25.6 billion in online sales between Nov. 15-22 – a jump from the 14.4 percent percent of online sales driven by e-mail marketing in the first two weeks of November. By the end of November, e-mail’s share of sales had jumped to 18.1 percent.

The New York Times passes 100 million views of its live streaming content after launching on Facebook Live in April 2016. The newspaper says its success was driven by an eclectic array of content.

More than half of advertisers still don’t include programmatic in their media buying strategies. Among the ones who do, about 30 percent found it was not an effective marketing channel for them, according to survey results scheduled for public release next Tuesday from Hanapin Marketing.

A new Reuters report says Amazon shipped more than 1 billion items worldwide this holiday season, nine times more than during last year’s holiday season. The Echo home assistant, and its smaller version Echo Dot, topped the best-sellers list.

A recent poll of 196 information technology pros by Computerworld suggests that security will be a major investment in 2017. Almost half say they plan to increase spending on security technologies, including investing in identity management, malware protection and privacy. 

Video ad server StreamRail sees a five-fold increase of mobile adoption in the Video Player-Ad Interface Definition (VPAID) in 2016. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) developed VPAID, which enables data-rich interactivity that’s more sophisticated at tracking and measuring than IAB’s Video Ad Serving Template.

7-Eleven completes 77 drone deliveries in November to customer homes in the United States through a collaboration with Flirtey, a service that supports commercial drone deliveries. Once shoppers place an order, merchandise – including items such as hot and cold food and over-the-counter medicines – is loaded into a custom Flirtey drone delivery container and flown, using GPS, to the customer’s house.

Convenience store operator QuickChek adds a geo-marketing program to stay engaged with mobile shoppers by delivering digital ads across e-mail, text messages, social media, and e-commerce. After analyzing 12-, 24- and 36-hour breakdowns following the delivery of an ad, the chain found it had people visiting who hadn’t been inside a retail location in 30 days.
