GroupM Cuts 2013 Ad Spending Estimate 
NEW YORK – WPP’s GroupM has cut its 2013 ad spending forecast to $507 billion, a gain of 3.5 percent over 2012. Earlier, the company had predicted 4.5-percent growth for the year, but has cut that estimate because of “continued economic discord” in the Eurozone, namely Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece.

Cable, Satellite Slip; Internet TV Rises 
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – The only segment of U.S. pay TV that grew subscribers during second-quarter 2013 was Internet protocol television (IPTV), while cable and satellite numbers plummeted according to new figures from analytics provider IHS.

Video Ads See Upswing in Second Quarter 
BALTIMORE – Online video ad impressions on computers in second-quarter 2013 rose 40 percent over the first quarter, according to a report from video ad platform Videology. Mobile video too saw a healthy rise, with a 73-percent increase in the number of ads viewed in the second quarter.

Mobile Conversions on the Rise 
NEW YORK – About a third of online conversions happen on mobile devices, says a new study by AOL and the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. And mobile conversion numbers are rising quickly – up 28 percent over last year.

Barry Jacobs, vice president of short-form for Santa Monica, Calif.-based Mercury Media and a long-time leader in the direct response media space, will be inducted into the Temple University Gallery of Success on Oct. 4 in Philadelphia. Jacobs, who graduated from Temple's School of Media & Communication, is that school's honoree for 2013. The 16th annual Gallery of Success Awards honors one alumnus from each of Temple’s schools and colleges. Gallery of Success inductees are individuals who have made significant achievements in the professions for which they prepared at Temple.

The InterMedia Group of Companies names Lynn Johnson as its senior vice president, chief human resources officer.

Chicago-based iD Commerce + Logistics acquires In a Bind Fulfillment. The two firms will operate under the iD Commerce + Logistics name.

Ifbyphone, a voice-based marketing automation company, announces the release of “Marketer’s Guide to Call Tracking for Google SEO and PPC,” an E-book that explains how businesses can improve their return on investment from Google by attributing the source of inbound phone calls back to specific Google searches.

Surging Media Group, a DRTV company, expands its newly developed television department and inks a deal with Nick Peterson of ABC’s “Bachelor Pad” to develop new reality series called “Courting America” that will be executively produced and co-created by Peterson and reality television and DRTV veteran Sergio Myers.

Charter Direct Marketing, a direct response advertising agency and DRTV consulting firm, moves to new offices at: 295 Madison Ave., Suite 1200, New York, NY 10017. Additionally, the company announces the addition of Jim Longo as vice president/account manager and the promotion of John Sutton to senior vice president of Charter Direct print.

Ocean Media, an independent media planning and buying firm, becomes agency of record for television media buying for, an online learning company.

NeuLion, a digital video broadcasting, distribution and monetization company, welcomes Tom Miller as sales director. For the past five years, Miller worked at Civolution.

Millennial Media agrees to buy Jumptap in a merger of two of the industry's top mobile ad networks. The deal is valued at about $225 million. Millennial CEO Paul Palmieri says while Millennial is known as the leader in mobile brand advertising, Jumptap has more of a focus on the performance advertising side of the business.

Nielsen publishes a report confirming a statistically significant link between Twitter activity and program ratings. The findings suggest a virtuous cycle, with a boost in one directly affecting the other. The report says tweets both drive consumers to tune-in to a program, and increase chat about shows they are already watching.

Global digital usage increased 12.9 percent in 2012 to an average of 5.3 hours per week, led by a surge in time spent with mobile media. Mobile usage in 2012 increased 21.9 percent over the prior year to 1.1 hours per week, while Internet usage rose 10.9 percent to 2.5 hours.

OneSpot, a content advertising platform, debuts a new tool called the "Content Sequencing Engine," allowing content marketers to programmatically retarget potential consumers down a "funnel," starting with awareness and ending with purchase intent. The platform will automatically place content-driven advertisements to specific users based on where they are in the funnel.
