Viewers Hitting ‘Off’ Button on Pay TV  
NEW YORK – Why do we need to pay cable and satellite companies when we’re watching YouTube and Netflix movies? Evidently that’s the question many TV viewers are asking themselves. And they’re answering in a loud and unified voice, “We don’t.” Then they follow up with phone calls to their pay-TV providers to cancel their service.

Google Writes $22.5 Million Check to FTC 
WASHINGTON – Google Inc. had to pull out its checkbook to pay the largest fine ever levied by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC): $22.5 million that will apparently settle allegations that it breached Apple’s Safari Internet browser. This is an FTC first for an Internet privacy violation. But it may not be last because the Commission has warned it’s beefing up enforcement of consumers’ online rights.

Online Advertisers Could Target TV Viewers 
NEW YORK – Media research giant Nielsen has announced a program that will help online advertisers target online consumers based on their TV and Web viewing habits. The program, called “Nielsen Online Audience Segments – TV Viewing,” could “prove invaluable to marketers … planning their advertising campaigns,” says Jonathan Carson, general manager of digital for Nielsen.

IAB Seeks DIY Ad Units 
NEW YORK – The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) says the ad industry should adopt drag-and-drop display ad units online – or possibly lose money to offline and falling CPM prices.

  a2b Fulfillment announces its new EZ START Fulfillment program, designed to simplify the DRTV start-up process. It will feature a package of the company’s most popular back-end functions for DR campaigns, including fulfillment with same-day shipping, order management, customer service, payment processing and system set-up and integrations.

  Zadspace Inc. announces it has expanded its Orchard Brands’ catalog program to include packages shipped by Blair, Haband, Appleseed’s, Tog Shop, Linen Source, Old Pueblo Traders, Bedford Fair, Sahalie, Solutions, Norm Thompson, Gold Violin, Draper’s & Damon’s and WinterSilks. The expansion, scalable to more than a million packages per month, follows a successful pilot program that ran from September 2011 to June 2012.

  As Seen On TV Inc. announces it will acquire DR weight loss company in an all-stock transaction valued near $13 million. The deal is expected to close by the start of 2013, just in time for the peak sales season of diet products and services.

  Media Design Group names Adam Roundtree its new director of business development.

  European-style housewares company Holstein Housewares launched Holstein’s Fun Cake Bites Maker and Brownie Maker with multi-channel retailer HSN on July 23.

  The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) announces keynote speakers for the DMA 2012 Annual Conference and Exhibition, set for October 13-18 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. They include: Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired magazine; David Fischer of Facebook; Buell G.   AMC Networks promotes Georgia Juvelis to senior vice president, corporate communications, and Lisa Rogen and Jaime Saberito to vice presidents of corporate communications.

  The Center for Media Research announces a new study available about online co-op advertising showing how much money is available in such programs, why much goes unused, how the programs work, who is using them and the 175 brands that offer co-op programs. Click here for details.

  Facebook has begun testing an updated design for its self-serve ad tool it launched in May to further simplify ad creation and set clear objectives. The tool aims to streamline the process and help advertisers to optimize campaigns based on their marketing goals.

  DISH Network reports it has taken a 7-percent stake in Rentrak Corp., a media-measurement company, while agreeing to supply it with exclusive access to its set-top-box data until 2016. In addition to 700,000 shares, DISH will receive $5.8 million in cash.

  Univision announces it has teamed with multiscreen ad platform company, Mixpo, to introduce multiscreen interactive tools for marketers called Base Plus Media that will allow Univision clients to run ads on-air and with interactivity across the Web, mobile phones, tablets and apps via one tech provider.

  Gartner, the media research company, releases a study that says digital strategies like social marketing will influence at least 80 percent of consumers’ discretionary spending by 2015. The findings, part of a joint study with ExactTarget, suggest that brands need to integrate their campaigns, such as E-mail, social, search, voice, video and more. Gartner estimates that 6.7 billion devices will connect to the Internet by 2014.
