DR Industry Mixes Business with Pleasure

17 May, 2012 By: Doug McPherson, Jackie Jones

SAN DIEGO – All-Access Badge holders rounded out the second day of Response Expo with two different cocktail receptions, ending the evening with a bevy of opportunities for networking, catching up with old industry friends and connecting with new contacts.

Response Expo attendees were first treated to a first-class time – shaken, not stirred – at the Martini Party, sponsored by Venable LLP, where they tasted a special selection of the finest martinis and delectable hors d’oeuvres. As the sun set later in the evening, All-Access Badge holders enjoyed a beautiful San Diego backdrop as they networked the night away at the Dangerous Night on the Front, which featured fire breathers, sword swallowers, and a surprise appearance by acrobats who rappelled down the side of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.. Both events were extensions of an already successful second day of Response Expo, guests said.

"We do a lot of work in the advertising space so a lot of our clients, those we advise and help with litigation, are at this conference,” said Ben Silverman of Venable. “And for those who don't know us, we can meet them. There's a bail bondsman in San Diego that I like to quote who says, ‘you'd rather know me and not need me than need me and not know me.’" It's a very fertile ground for us and that's why we’re one of the main sponsors. We've been involved with Response for a number a years and we believe in them and have a good relationship with."

Guests at the Venable Martini Party were treated to the signature Venable drink, an acai blueberry vodka with curacao, sour mix and fresh orange. Also available on the menu was the 007 martini, the perfect drink for those on their way to the Bayfront Party, this year’s “Dangerous Night on the Front,” where it didn’t take long for the night’s events to impress, with the sword swallower attracting a crowd of onlookers within minutes of her arrival.

“This was my first time at Response Expo and it’s been very impressive,” Eric Rose, an inventor and professor at Pepperdine University, said at the Venable Martini Party. “I’m here on the inventors’ side and I came to pitch a variety of ideas and products and have already come up with a few business opportunities that hold a lot of potential. I’m glad I made the trip here.”

"I've gone to the sessions and this one of the best conferences for our industry,” added Joan Renfrow, president of Onyx Productions Direct. “It's my education ... I'm not in the world of DR marketing day to day so this is where I get my crash education. I'm amazed at how few people take advantage of this. Response does an amazing job with these conferences."
